Singh promises 100% tariffs on Tesla, revival of electric vehicle incentive program

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 10 Feb, 2025 12:55 PM
  • Singh promises 100% tariffs on Tesla, revival of electric vehicle incentive program

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says Canada should charge 100 per cent tariffs on Tesla vehicles for as long as its trade war with the United States continues.

He also says in a new release today that a government led by him would revive the federal government's incentive program for electric vehicle purchases.

An NDP spokesperson says the rebate would not apply to Tesla vehicles in a trade war with the U.S.

Since May 2019 the Liberal government provided up to $5,000 off the cost of a new electric vehicle but now says the funding for the program has now run out.

Some Liberal leadership candidates are promising to restore it to some degree.

Karina Gould says she would double the incentives and include gas-hybrid vehicles while Mark Carney says he would restore the rebate program but limit it to people in low- and medium-income households.

That election call would send Ontarians to the polls on Feb. 27, more than a year before the June 2026 fixed election date.

Former chief trade negotiator says Alberta undermining Canada in U.S. tariff talks
Ottawa's former chief trade negotiator Steve Verheul says Alberta is undermining Canada's attempts to prevent the U.S. from levying damaging tariffs. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has rallied most of the premiers to agree that all sectors of the Canadian economy could be deployed to fight back against U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to impose 25 per cent tariffs on all imports from Canada.
