Startled Rescue Dog Bites Owner, Three Others During Victoria-Area Party

The Canadian Press, 05 Nov, 2018 12:19 PM
COLWOOD, B.C. — The fate of a rescue dog is in question after a weekend house party in suburban Victoria at which RCMP say the animal became agitated and bit several people.

West Shore RCMP say in a news release that they were called to a Colwood home early Saturday to find 13 people, including several children, had barricaded themselves in the home to protect themselves from the roughly 45-kilogram pit bull.

Cpl. Chris Dovell says none of the children was hurt and the dog's owner, one of the four people bitten, had managed to secure it in a bedroom before police arrived.

Another victim, who Dovell says was heavily intoxicated, was arrested after taking off his shirt and trying to fight with officers, who were working with animal control staff to remove the dog from the home.

The four-year-old, recently adopted pit bull has been seized and its history of aggression is being reviewed.

Dovell says the dog may have been startled in the moments before the victims were bitten.

"The attack started during some roughhousing between two intoxicated adult male guests at the party, where it appears the dog was bumped into and became aggressive," Dovell says in the release.

The four adults were treated in hospital and released.
