  • Surrey celebrates National Tree Day with hands-on tree planting to grow its urban forest

The City of Surrey’s annual Releaf tree planting program kicks off with a lively National Tree Day celebration on Sept. 27.  Residents of all ages are invited to enjoy music, activities, and hands-on tree planting to help grow Surrey’s urban forest during National Forest Week.

For more than 30 years, Releaf volunteers have planted thousands of trees and shrubs each year in Surrey’s parks, restoring natural areas, improving air quality, creating wildlife habitat and strengthening local biodiversity.

“Surrey’s Releaf program brings residents together to care for our urban forest,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Last year, more than 2,200 residents participated in the fall program, planting more than 7,200 trees and shrubs. Thank you to all the volunteers who help nurture and grow our city’s green spaces.”

This fall’s tree planting events take place in five parks:

  • Bolivar Park, Saturday, Sept. 27 (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.)
  • William Beagle Park, Saturday, Oct. 4 (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
  • Panorama Park, Saturday, Oct. 11 (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
  • Hazelnut Meadows Community Park, Saturday, Oct. 18 (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
  • Kennedy Park, Saturday, Oct. 25 (10 a.m. – 12 p.m.)

“The Releaf program empowers residents to be stewards of Surrey’s environment,” said Rob Landucci, urban forestry manager. “Whether you are planting your first tree or your 50th, every contribution helps strengthen our urban canopy and build climate resilience across our parks.

Gloves and equipment will be provided. Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes and dress for the weather. The event will go ahead rain or shine but may be cancelled if there are strong winds or severe weather.
