Surrey Celebrates Vaisakhi

Darpan News Desk Darpan, 19 Apr, 2014 06:00 PM

Vaisakhi, the harvest festival, was celebrated in Surrey April 19, with much delight and elation. Individuals came out in droves to attend the Nagar Kirtan procession and celebrate the festival which commemorates the birth of the Khalsa and also marks the New Year for Sikhs.

"Vaisakhi is an important reminder of the proud and enduring Sikh culture.  For over a century, your contributions to British Columbia have enriched us all. Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, to grow our economy and strengthen our communities," BC Premier Christy Clark said in a statement.

“On behalf of all British Columbians, I wish you prosperity, health and happiness as you celebrate with your friends, family and community, and for the coming year."

NDP leader Jasbir Sandhu, MP for Surrey North also passed his wishes saying "I want to congratulate the Sikh community of Surrey for making Surrey Vaisakhi parade bigger, better and more inclusive every year, and I am proud to be a part of it."

"Vaisakhi is now one of the grandest community celebrations in our city. It attracts people from all backgrounds and binds them in celebration," Sandhu said.

There was excitement in the air as parade attendees, ranging in ages and ethnicities, watched the floats during the Nagar Kirtan, and along the route, there were food stalls, booths and stages, which featured performers from religious groups singing Kirtan.

The Nagar Kirtan commenced at the Gurdwara Dashmesh Darbar Temple at 85th Avenue, and travelled along 124th Street, then the procession turned left onto 75th Avenue, continuing along 76th Avenue. The parade then headed up 128th Street, and the Granth returned to the Gurdwara on 85th marking the conclusion of the procession.

DARPAN Magazine participated in the Nagar Kirtan, and the team handed out copies of the special Vaisakhi collector’s issue. We would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous year!

The BC government is recommending Okanagan tree fruit growers include insurance for hail damage in their 2014 risk management plans, and take advantage of the fact that BC premiums are the lowest in Canada. Hail insurance offered jointly by British Columbia and Canada is a cost-effective way for farm families to ensure that weather risks such as hail can be managed and farm businesses can be sustained.
