  • Surrey MLAs Host Annual Diwali Celebration Honouring Light, Culture, and Community

On Sunday, October 27th, the Grand Empire Hall in Surrey was aglow with celebration as local MLAs Garry Begg, Jessie Sunner, Amna Shah, and Jagrup Brar hosted their annual Diwali community event. The gathering brought together families, community leaders, elected officials, and residents from across Surrey to mark the Festival of Lights with joy, unity, and cultural pride.

The evening featured three captivating performances by local artists. The event opened with an energetic bhangra performance by the young boys of Folk Lore Academy, followed by a soulful musical set by singer Vidit Mehta. The final performance was a graceful Bharatanatyam dance by Priyadarshini Desai, founder of Priya Dance Academy, whose artistry left a lasting impression on the audience.

Ministers Jessie Sunner and Jagrup Brar emceed the event, while Parliamentary Secretaries Amna Shah and Garry Begg mingled with guests, sharing warm conversations and festive cheer. All four MLAs later joined attendees for group photos, capturing the spirit of togetherness that defines Diwali.

A special moment came when young local artist Diva Manchanda presented the MLAs with a hand-drawn portrait of Lord Rama, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Guests enjoyed delicious appetizers throughout the evening, and children were invited to paint their own divas at a dedicated table — a creative activity that allowed them to take home a meaningful souvenir.

Diwali, celebrated this year on October 20th, is observed across the Indian diaspora with a shared message: the victory of light over darkness and the power of unity. The annual event in Surrey continues to be a cherished tradition that reflects these values and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the community.
