Suspect arrested and charged with attempted murder following stabbing outside Columbia SkyTrain station in New Westminster

On May 29th at approximately 2:00 am, New Westminster Police Department patrol members responded to a report of a stabbing on Columbia Street outside of the Columbia Sky-Train station.

When officers arrived they located a man suffering from life-threatening injuries. Officers provided assistance and he was transported to the hospital by BC Ambulance. An initial search for a suspect involved support from the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit.

New Westminster Police Major Crime Unit investigators assumed conduct of the investigation. The New Westminster Forensic Identification Section were called to process the scene. Investigators worked diligently and were able to identify and locate a suspect.

“Detectives worked with our policing partners from across the lower mainland region and we located and safely arrested a suspect,” stated Sergeant Sanjay Kumar. “The suspect remains in-custody until his next court appearance on June 9th.”

On May 31st, 2021, 26 year old Murid Ghulam of New Westminster was arrested and since then he has been charged with the following offences:

One (1) count of attempted murder contrary to Section 239(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Although Mr. Ghulam and the victim are associated to known Lower Mainland gangs, investigators have not yet been able to confirm the motive behind the stabbing. The New Westminster Police Department encourages anyone who knows about this incident and has yet to speak to police to call the Major Crime Unit at 60
