Suspended Senator Back In Court As Sexual Assault Trial Resumes In Quebec

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 14 May, 2015 12:53 PM
GATINEAU, Que. — The defence attorney for suspended senator Patrick Brazeau is continuing his cross-examination of the Crown's main witness at his client's criminal trial, which resumes today after a six-week break.

Brazeau is facing charges of assault and sexual assault arising from an alleged incident two years ago in the Quebec city of Gatineau. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The female complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, has alleged that Brazeau pushed her down some stairs, hit her head against a wall and a staircase, spat on her and sexually assaulted her.

Brazeau's lawyer Gerard Larocque has already said that his client will take the stand in his own defence.

Larocque has suggested that the woman instigated the physical confrontation that led to his client's arrest — accusing her of striking Brazeau with her hand and a bra.

He has tried to poke holes in the woman's story and has repeatedly challenged her credibility, saying she kept authorities in the dark about some details of the February 2013 incident.
