Suspension of University of Ottawa varsity hockey team prompts class action

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 13 Jan, 2015 01:39 PM

OTTAWA — The lawyer for all but two members of the University of Ottawa men's hockey team says he is seeking approval for a class-action lawsuit against the school.

Lawrence Greenspon says the university tarnished the reputations of every member of the 2013-14 squad, which was suspended en masse amid allegations of sexual assault.

Two students who were on the team were charged last summer with sexually assaulting a female student at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay.

Almost a month after the alleged incident in February, university president Allan Rock suspended the entire men's varsity hockey team for the season.

Andrew Creppin, one of the team members, is currently the only one with his name attached to the lawsuit.

Creppin says his hopes of a career in hockey were all but dashed following the suspension, and he has been living under a cloud of suspicion and taunts ever since.
