Third Day Of Deliberations At Inquest Examining Deadly Blast In Burns Lake, B.C.

The Canadian Press, 31 Jul, 2015 11:57 AM
  • Third Day Of Deliberations At Inquest Examining Deadly Blast In Burns Lake, B.C.
BURNS LAKE, B.C. — A coroner's jury is continuing its deliberations into a Burns Lake, B.C., sawmill explosion that killed two men more than three years ago.

Forty-five-year-old Robert Luggi and 42-year-old Carl Charlie died in the Jan. 20, 2012 blast that seriously injured 19 others and destroyed Babine Forest Products near Burns Lake, 225 kilometres west of Prince George.

The five-man, two-woman jury retired Wednesday afternoon and deliberated all day Thursday after hearing testimony from nearly 50 witnesses over the 13-day inquest.

Jurors must decide whether the deaths of Luggi and Charlie are natural, undetermined or the result of accident, suicide or homicide.

The panel can also issue recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In May, a separate coroner's jury into the April 23, 2012 explosion at Lakeland Mills in Prince George, issued 33 recommendations and also found the deaths of 46-year-old Glenn Roche and 43-year-old Alan Little were accidents.
