Tootoo Meets Constituents After Taking Leave Of Absence For Alcohol Addiction

The Canadian Press, 27 Jul, 2016 12:43 PM
OTTAWA — Independent MP Hunter Tootoo met with constituents in Iqaluit today, resuming his political career after a two-month leave of absence.

Tootoo, a former member of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal cabinet, had been undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction.

He abruptly resigned as fisheries minister and from the party caucus at the end of May.

At the time, Trudeau said Tootoo left of his own accord amid a "very difficult situation," but refused to elaborate further.

The Prime Minister's Office refused to comment earlier this week on Tootoo's imminent return to politics.

Government House leader Dominic LeBlanc, who assumed Tootoo’s responsibilities on the fisheries file, has since juggled both roles, prompting speculation about the need for cabinet changes due to the size of the portfolios.
