Toronto Zoo Polar Bear Cub Born On Remembrance Day 2015 Named Juno

    TORONTO — A polar bear cub born at Toronto Zoo on Remembrance Day last year has been given a name that's in keeping with her date of birth — Juno.
     
    The name commemorates the beach in northern France where Canadian troops landed as part of the Second World War D-Day invasion in June 1944.
     
    The cub was initially given the name as a nickname, however zoo staff said in a statement Thursday they have "made this name official as it embodies Canadian pride and is representative of polar bears, one of Canada's national treasures."
     
    Juno has also been adopted as the official "live" mascot of the Canadian Army and carries the rank of Private.
     
    Juno was one of two cubs born to Aurora on Nov. 11, but the other cub did not survive.
     
    Visitors to the zoo will be able to see the cub for the first time on Saturday, international Polar Bear Day.
