Tory MP Larry Miller Says Niqab Comments Went Too Far But Stands By His Point Of View

  • Tory MP Larry Miller Says Niqab Comments Went Too Far But Stands By His Point Of View
OTTAWA — An Ontario Tory MP is apologizing after saying people who want to wear a niqab when swearing the oath of citizenship shouldn't come to Canada.

Larry Miller told a local radio station that if someone's not willing to show their face in a ceremony when joining Canada they should "stay the hell" where they came from.

Miller was commenting on the issue of a Toronto woman taking the federal government to court over its ban on the wearing of full-face coverings when taking the oath of citizenship.

The Federal Court had overturned the ban but the government is appealing.

Miller told Owen Sound radio station CFOS on Monday he thinks most Canadians support the ban and he's tired of people coming to Canada and wanting to change things.

But on Tuesday, he said he stands by his view that anyone being sworn in as a citizen should uncover their face, but he apologized for remarks that went beyond that.
