Town Manager Questioning Police Action In Shooting Death Of Newfoundland Man

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 07 Apr, 2015 11:17 AM
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The manager of a small Newfoundland town says residents are questioning why a police officer would go into one of their neighbour's homes alone and end up shooting the man.

Susan Parrott says her phone has not stopped ringing since Sunday, when an officer attached to the premier's security detail shot 59-year-old Don Dunphy in his home in Mitchells Brook.

Parrott says it's also unclear why the officer went to the home on the Easter holiday and without the accompaniment of the RCMP, which she said has jurisdiction over that area.

Police have said an officer with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was working a regularly scheduled shift when he went to Dunphy's house as part of an investigation.

Premier Paul Davis said Monday that his staff told police about potentially threatening tweets Friday, but that he was not aware of them until Dunphy was fatally shot.

Davis mentioned comments that Dunphy had posted to the Twitter feeds of the premier and a cabinet minister on Friday.

Police said an autopsy was expected to be done today.
