Trial Begins For Calgary Woman In Death Of Seven-year-old Son From Strep Infection

The Canadian Press, 28 Nov, 2016 10:57 AM
CALGARY — The Crown says the death of a seven-year-old Calgary boy who was given holistic treatments for a strep infection could have been prevented with medical attention.

Tamara Lovett, who is 47, is charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life and with criminal negligence causing the death of her son.

Ryan Alexander Lovett died in March 2013 after getting a strep infection that kept him bedridden for 10 days.

Prosecutor Jonathan Hak said in his opening arguments that the family lived in squalor and that the boy's birth hadn't been registered.

The child had been treated with dandelion tea and oil of oregano.

An emergency medical technician told court the child showed no signs of life and was cold to the touch when paramedics arrived.
