Trial Hears Alberta Had Little Record Of Diabetic Teen Before He Died

    CALGARY — A trial has heard that a teen who died of untreated diabetes and starvation virtually disappeared from public life once his family relocated to Alberta from British Columbia.
     
    Emil and Rodica Radita have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the death of 15-year-old Alexandru, who weighed less than 37 pounds when he died in Calgary in 2013.
     
    An Alberta education official has testified that the department had no record of Alexandru, except for a registration as part of an online school in 2009.
     
    There was no sign that he attended any school after that date.
     
    Alberta Health officials say the teen did have a health care card, but didn't visit a doctor from 2009 to 2013.
     
    A pharmacist says the family purchased nearly $1,600 worth of insulin and diabetic supplies in 2009, but the number dropped to zero four years later when the boy died.
