Trudeau Discusses Infrastructure, Economic Growth With Yukon Premier

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 09 Feb, 2017 12:59 PM
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Yukon Premier Sandy Silver met on Parliament Hill on Wednesday to discuss infrastructure, economic growth, energy and reconciliation with indigenous peoples.

Silver, territorial representatives and indigenous leaders are in Ottawa for a series of meetings with members of Trudeau's cabinet.

"Never before has it been ... government to government to government meetings, so we changed that," Silver said in an interview on Wednesday.

"It brings certainty when everybody is at the table and the dialogue is flowing."

Silver said he is keen to see the development of an Arctic strategy — a pledge made by the federal government.

Ottawa has committed to working on the plan with northerners, territorial governments and indigenous leaders.

Trudeau is to visit Nunavut and the Northwest Territories on Thursday and Friday — his first trip there since the 2015 election campaign.

The premiers of the three territories have criticized Ottawa's moratorium on Arctic drilling, suggesting the decision was made unilaterally.
