Two Drown In St. Lawrence Near Cornwall In Suspected Human Smuggling Attempt

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Sep, 2015 12:26 PM
CORNWALL, Ont. — Two men have drowned in the St. Lawrence River near Cornwall, Ont, in what authorities suspect was a failed human smuggling attempt.

Authorities say the two were on a Sea-Doo watercraft that capsized in the river on Wednesday.  A third passenger and the Sea-Doo driver survived.

U.S. Customs and Border Protections said the two victims were believed to have been trying to enter the U.S. illegally from Canada.

The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service added that the men may have entered Canada from India.

The Sea-Doo driver — a 36-year old man from Snye, Que. — has been charged with two counts of negligence causing death, one count of conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and one count of breach of probation.

The RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency are also involved in the investigation.
