Two Rescued As Apartment Fire Forces Out 33 People In Kamloops, B.C.

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 02 Jan, 2019 08:55 PM

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — Two people needed to be rescued from the upper floor of an apartment building in Kamloops, B.C., as flames raced through one room of the converted hotel.

Kamloops Fire Rescue Capt. Darryl Cooper says the blaze was reported early Wednesday and crews had to use a ladder truck to rescue the people.

Staff of the apartment were already working to evacuate 33 people from the building as firefighters arrived.

Tenants in a part of the Duchess Hotel unaffected by the smoke and flames will be allowed to return their rooms but officials say the remainder will have to stay elsewhere until further notice.

Fire damage was mainly confined to a single room, but Cooper says there is smoke damage in the hallway and water damage to the floors below.

He says a cause of the fire is being investigated.
