Vancouver Police Alert Taxpayers About Ongoing 'CRA Scam'

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 05 Jun, 2016 02:50 PM
  • Vancouver Police Alert Taxpayers About Ongoing 'CRA Scam'
The VPD continues to get reports of a scam committed by individuals who are threatening potential victims and claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency.

Scammers are calling people, telling them they owe money to the CRA, and that they will be arrested if they don’t pay. In some cases, the suspects know the victim’s name and home address.

Victims are often instructed to send a money order or gift cards to the suspect to cover the debt. In the most recent cases, they were told to specifically purchase iTunes gift cards to pay the fines. One recent victim was conned out of several thousand dollars.

Police are warning the public to hang up the phone if they receive a call like this from anyone. If someone is unsure about a call they receive, they should contact the CRA for clarification.
