Veteran NDP MP, deputy leader Libby Davies bows out of federal politics

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 12 Dec, 2014 02:28 PM

OTTAWA — NDP stalwart Libby Davies will not seek re-election next year.

The 61-year-old veteran MP has represented the riding of Vancouver East since 1997, winning six consecutive elections.

Davies' decision is a blow for New Democrats.

She has been a standard-bearer for the left wing of the party and a staunch supporter of the Palestinians in their conflict with Israel.

There has been some speculation that her position on Palestine put her at odds with Tom Mulcair, who has taken a more pro-Israeli stance since becoming NDP leader almost three years ago.

Nevertheless, Mulcair named her one of three deputy leaders.

Davies, who was a city councillor before being elected to the House of Commons, says 40 years in public service is enough; it's time for her to call it a day.
