WATCH: WATCH: History was made on Monday in provincial politics with Raj Chouhan becoming the first person of South Asian heritage as Speaker of the BC legislature.

On this historic feat he told DARPAN "There was a time when people of color were not even allowed to enter this building, let alone the chamber which I will be presiding over now." "Its a long journey and I am so grateful and say thank you to all those people who went before us and did all this for us!"

As the founder of the Farm Workers Union who fought against injustice in BC and Canada, he reflected on the the #farmersProtest ragin in India at this time.

He has also been a 5 term MLA with the BC NDP. Premier John Horgan and his other New Democrat colleague’s congratulated him on his new role- calling it a historic day in BC politics. He joined Darpan's social media host Ish Sharma to talk about his new role.
