Wildfire near Lytton, B.C., larger than initial estimate after aerial mapping

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 30 Jul, 2025 09:37 AM
  • Wildfire near Lytton, B.C., larger than initial estimate after aerial mapping

BC Wildfire Service data show a blaze south of Lytton that has triggered multiple evacuation alerts is three times its original estimated size and continues to burn out of control.

The service's latest update on the Cantilever Bar wildfire says it is now measured at 4.6 square kilometres, up from the 1.5 square kilometres reported earlier this week.

The update says the larger estimate is due to more-accurate perimeter mapping after smoke cleared enough to allow aircraft to fly overhead.

Evacuation alerts over the fire have been imposed by Thompson-Nicola Regional District and three local First Nations communities.

The wildfire service says the blaze is about 10 kilometres south of Lytton — a community devastated by fire in 2021 — and on the west side of the Fraser River.

It says the fire is highly visible from Highway 1 and motorists should drive with extra caution.

The service says 45 firefighters are on site, and "conditions are very dry and fuels are highly susceptible to ignition."

There are about 60 active wildfires burning across the province.

NDP seeks distance from Liberals, sees fight in next election is with Conservatives
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh began 2024 by propping up Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s minority government. He is ending the year calling for Trudeau’s resignation. Singh's gradual effort to limit his alliance with the Liberals hastened this week after Trudeau's finance minister quit, plunging the government into more political chaos and raising questions about whether Trudeau can even stay on as prime minister much longer.

What is a trade deficit — and does it matter to the economy
In a post on Truth Social early Wednesday, Donald Trump claimed his country is financially supporting its northern neighbour. The U.S. president-elect wrote that “we subsidize Canada to the tune of $100,000,000 a year" — an apparent reference to a previous claim about a $100-billion trade gap — and said the imbalance “makes no sense.”
