A Winnipeg city councillor who was the son of a formerManitoba premier and governor general of Canada has died.

Mayor Scott Gillingham confirmed Jason Schreyer, councillorfor Elmwood-East Kildonan, died this week.

Gillingham could not provide details on the cause of death or when it occurred, but local media reported Schreyer attended a federal election gathering Monday at Leila Dance's headquarters, the outgoing member of Parliament for Elmwood-Transcona.

Schreyer was first elected in 2014 when he unseated formerWinnipeg Jets player Thomas Steen, who served one term.

He is the son of Ed Schreyer, who led Manitoba's NDP government from 1969 to 1977 and was the governor general from 1979 to 1984.

Gillingham offered condolences to Schreyer's family on behalf of city council.

"Jason comes from a family dedicated to public service. A legacy that his parents set and Jason carried on serving citizens in elected office," Gillingham told reporters Wednesday morning.

"Our council is shocked to hear of his death, and on behalf ofall city council, we extend our deepest condolences."

Gillingham added that Schreyer was a strong and independent voice for his ward, where his family's roots ran deep, and that beyond politics, he brought joy to those around him.

Flags at all city buildings will be lowered to half-mast.
