Wireless Lobby Sues Quebec Over Law Banning Access To Some Online Gaming Sites

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 27 Jul, 2016 12:40 PM
MONTREAL — Canada's wireless telecom lobby is taking the Quebec government to court over a new law that would ban Quebecers' access to certain online gaming websites.

The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association filed papers today asking Quebec Superior Court to declare the new law unconstitutional.

The new Internet law was adopted last May and would force Internet companies to block Quebecers' access to online gaming websites not approved by the provincial government.

The wireless lobby argues telecom law is strictly a federal jurisdiction and that Quebec has no authority to legislate in the matter.

Finance Minister Carlos Leitao has said his law is necessary to ensure online gambling companies maintain responsible gaming rules in accordance with Quebec law.

Critics say the law violates freedom of expression and infringes on the federal Telecommunications Act.
