Young Child Seriously Injured After Being Struck By Farming Equipment

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 20 Jul, 2017 11:10 AM
CLEMENTSVALE, N.S. — A seven-year-old girl is in critical condition after her leg was severed when she was struck by a farm tractor in rural Nova Scotia.

RCMP Sgt. Terry Miller says the child was playing in a field that was being mowed when the accident happened at around 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Clementsvale area.

Miller says it appears the young girl was alone when she hid in deep, one-metre high grass and wasn't seen by the operator of the tractor that has a side-cutting attachment.

He says paramedics arrived on the "horrific" scene in less than 30 minutes and police arrived shortly after.

Police say she was airlifted to a hospital in Halifax, where Miller said it was hoped her limb could be reattached.

Miller says the girl is not from the area and was visiting her grandparents at a property adjacent to the hay field.

He says the operator of the farm equipment is "devastated" by the heartbreaking accident.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident, but Miller says there is no suspicion of criminal activity and charges will likely not be laid.
