Canada U20 Rallies To Defeat Romania For Second Time In As Many Matches

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 15 Mar, 2015 05:16 PM
LANGFORD, B.C. — Canada’s under-20 men's rugby squad knocked off Romania's under-19 side for the second match in a row as the Canadians rallied from an early 10-point deficit to win 36-13 Saturday.

After giving up the first two tries, Tony Pomroy sparked Canada’s offence with a solo effort as he weaved through the Romanian defence, slipped through a tackle and found the try line.

From there, Canada ran away with the game in the second half— out-scoring Romania 22-0 to earn the victory.

"I was happy with the win and happy with the way they composed themselves after being down 10-0," said Canadian U20 head coach Jeff Williams. "I was happy with the set pieces and the lineouts. Those platforms worked very well for us to attack from and they gave us an opportunity to put ourselves in position to score or get a penalty."

Along with Pomroy’s try, Brandon Waeyen scored two tries for Canada while Karsten Leitner and Paul Cuilini each tallied one. Dylan Horgan scored 11 from the boot as he converted four tries and a penalty.

Romania’s Cojocaru Ovidiu and Ciprian Lucaci scored tries for the visitors and Melinte Ionel converted one penalty.

Trailing early, Canada’s Harjun Gill was taken off the field by ambulance due to precautionary reasons after injuring his head. But he was back at the stadium at the end of the game and joined in the team’s post-game celebration.

"After the injury to Harjun, it took a little bit of time for the guys to get composed," said Williams.

The Canadians also beat the visiting U19 side 21-9 earlier this week.

Canada will now prepare for its two-match series with the United States U20 side in late March, which will see the winner earn the right to represent North America at the junior world rugby trophy 2015.
