Hamburg Sends Bid For 2024 Olympics To Ioc; Referendum Set For Nov. 29

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 09 Sep, 2015 11:07 AM
Hamburg has formally submitted its bid for the 2024 Olympics.

City officials and German Olympic leaders signed the bid application on Wednesday and sent it to the International Olympic Committee.

Alfons Hoermann, the president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), says "we invite the international sports family to get to know our clearly colorful and increasingly diverse country."

Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz says the city can handle both the Olympics and the influx of refugees to the region. He says the migrants' arrival in Germany is a sign of Germany's welcoming reputation.

The bid still faces a referendum among Hamburg residents on Nov. 29.

Paris, Rome, Los Angeles and Budapest, Hungary, are other declared bidders. Toronto is also mulling a bid.

The IOC deadline for formal submission of bid entries is Sept. 15.
