  • History Made in Vernon with Inaugural Kabaddi Cup

History was made in Vernon on Sunday, August 17, as the city hosted its first-ever Vernon Kabaddi Cup at the DND Military Field. The landmark event marked the debut of the traditional South Asian sport of kabaddi in the North Okanagan region, drawing enthusiastic crowds and uniting the community in celebration of culture, sport, and diversity.

Organized by the National Kabaddi Association of Canada in collaboration with MLA Harwinder Sandhu and the City of Vernon, the tournament welcomed residents from all backgrounds to experience kabaddi—many for the very first time.

“This was such an exciting moment for our community,” said MLA Harwinder Sandhu (Vernon-Monashee). “The Vernon Kabaddi Cup not only brought people together to witness the energy and athleticism of the sport but also provided an opportunity to celebrate the rich cultural traditions that help make our region vibrant and inclusive. I’m proud to support events that foster understanding and unity.”

The Vernon Kabaddi Cup was open to the public and free to attend. Spectators were treated to a full day of high-energy matches, cultural exchange, and community spirit.

Kabaddi is a contact team sport that dates back over 4,000 years to its origins in South Asia. Played between two teams of seven, the game challenges players to cross into the opposing team’s half, tag defenders, and return safely—all while holding their breath and chanting “kabaddi.” The sport demands a blend of physical strength, agility, and tactical thinking, and has grown from its roots into an internationally recognized competition with professional leagues across the world.

The success of this inaugural event signals promising momentum for future kabaddi tournaments and cultural programming in the region.

Photos and videos from the event, including highlights from matches and community participation, are courtesy of the National Kabaddi Association of Canada and MLA Harwinder Sandhu.
