Canada’s Mohammed Ahmed has earned the title of an Olympic medallist, securing a Silver medal in Friday’s 5000m event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau congratulated Ahmed on his win via a Twitter post.

His official finish time was 12:58.61.

Ahmed was born in Somalia and moved to Ontario at the age of 11 kicked off his career as a runner.

Ahmed made a North American continental record with his best time in the 5000m at 12:47.20. 

Ahmed gave Canada its first Olympic medal ever in a men’s long distance track event.
