Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 30 Jul, 2024 03:32 PM
  • Paris Olympics round up for Team Canada

At the last check, The Canadian team sat ninth in the total medal standings with five medals -- two gold, one silver, and two bronze.

Canada closed in on a quarterfinal berth in men's basketball with a 93-83 comeback win over Australia in Lille. R-J Barrett, who plays for the N-B-A's Toronto Raptors, led Canada with 24 points. Canada can wrap up a final-eight berth as early as today if Germany beats Brazil in today's late game.

Twin sisters Katherine and Michelle Plouffe (ploof) of Edmonton combined for 18 points as Canada thumped Australia 22-14 on the opening day of the women's 3x3 basketball tournament. Katherine had a game-high 10 points, while Michelle added eight points and a team-high five rebounds. Canada next faces China on Wednesday.

Felix Auger-Aliassime (oh-ZHAY' ah-lee-ah-SEEM'), may have worked up a sweat in his second-round tennis match, but it was more likely because of the heat on the clay courts of Roland Garros than the play of his opponent. Montreal's Auger-Aliassime cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Germany's Maximilain Marterer in a match where he reeled off a winning streak of 10 games before his opponent got on the board. Fellow Canadian Leylah Fernandez didn't fare as well, losing to Angelique Kerber of Germany in a women's third-round match.

A French canoe and kayak coach working at the Paris Olympicswas detained after allegedly hitting police officers who had stopped him for urinating in the street, prosecutors said. The French canoe and kayak federation said Guillaume Berge was suspended from his duties. It said Berge was working at the Olympic venue to encourage public interest in the sports via virtual kayaking and children’s events.
