Surrey wrestler earns NCAA Division 1 All American Crown

Darpan News Desk, 21 Mar, 2018 04:13 PM
Khalsa Wrestling Club's Amar Dhesi initially made history by being the first Canadian wrestler to earn a full-ride scholarship to an NCAA Division 1 School, valued at approximately $250,000 US dollars.

Amar Dhesi has been attending Oregon State University since 2012. In that time, Amar has won 2 PAC-12 Championships and has earned 2 All American crowns (awarded to the top 8 wrestlers in the USA only).

Last week, Amar won a third place bronze medal at the NCAA Division 1 National Championships held in Cleveland, Ohio.

The NCAA is known to be the biggest sports organization in the world, having approximately half million athletes. 2016 Olympic Champion, Kyle Snyder was the eventual gold medalist in the 285 pound weight class in which Amar won the bronze medal.

Amar makes history by being the only Indo-Canadian to ever win a medal and earn all american status at the NCAA Division 1 level.

Moving forward, Amar is a hopeful for the 2020 Olympics being held in Tokyo, Japan. He will be wrestling for a spot on the Canadian World Team this year in July, at the Canada Cup tournament held in Toronto.
