Perfecting Your Patio

Update your outdoor space by picking furniture that really fits

Patio season is in full swing come the summer months and if you haven’t already embraced all that outdoor living has to offer, now’s the time to create the perfect patio. Put away your camping chairs, fold up your TV tray, and find furniture that suits your space, fits your lifestyle, and encourages you to take in the outdoors without leaving your home.

A patio should begin with a plan just like any other room indoors. Will you use it for dinner parties or entertaining guests? Or sun tanning solo and quiet nights at home? You may opt for a large dining table over several seating areas or a fire pit instead of a chaise lounger. The function of your outdoor oasis will allow you to determine what your furniture needs will be.

Comfort is a highly important consideration when it comes to patio furniture. Spend some time sitting in chairs or at tables before you purchase any for your patio. Wire or metal seating or low loveseats may look nice but turn out to be uncomfortable for you and your guests. Do invest in plush cushions designed for outdoor use to increase your comfort – just don’t forget to take them indoors when they’re not in use. You’ll be sure to take advantage of the extra outdoor space if the furniture is comfortable and inviting.

In spaces without a lot of room to move around, you’ll want to purchase furniture that folds or can be tucked in or away. Look for multifunction pieces that allow seating to transform into a table or storage to double as extra seating. Add a bistro set instead of a dining table so you can enjoy the benefits of dining al fresco without taking up too much space.

The location of your patio will also bring about certain considerations when it comes to what furniture you buy. A large umbrella may be a necessity if you don’t get a reprieve from the sunshine. Look for a hanging one that tilts, opens easily and has height adjustments to ensure it will offer you the protection you need. Similarly, you may want to enjoy the outdoors regardless of whether the sun comes out to play; in which case, a large sun shelter can provide protection for curling up on cool, wet days.

Because your furniture belongs outdoors, it should be able to withstand the elements. Invest in materials that will last without the hassle of considerable upkeep unless you plan on swapping out plastic chairs or warped wood every couple of years. Find furniture made in all-weather wicker or materials such as rattan, metal, teak and cedar which should be long lasting throughout varying conditions.

The materials may not matter as much when you’re designing your interior but updating outdoors comes with specific considerations. You may host a variety of gatherings on your patio or seek out the sun as it moves across the sky – if your setup changes depending on who is coming over or what activities might take place, look for lightweight and rust resistant pieces or furniture with wheels that can be moved around and stored easily.

If you don’t have the need to rearrange your furniture on a weekly basis, invest in sturdier pieces, like a large cedar table that will feel more like the type of furniture you’re used to inside your home. Try wrought iron pieces for a classic look that will hold up against the elements.

Patios are the perfect place to let your inner colour-lover loose. Outdoor furniture comes in an abundance of colourful finishes making it easy to leave the natural tones to nature. Pillows, blankets, pottery and serving trays are all easy ways to bring bold pops of colour to your patio that you may be hesitant to try indoors.

Consider what your patio furniture will look like against your home’s exterior. While it may suit your style, not all the colours, materials or textures you love will look good when situated outdoors.

While rugs may seem like something reserved for indoor décor, all-weather textiles are perfect for defining your outdoor space. An outdoor rug can add colour, ground your furniture, protect your deck, and keep your feet more comfortable. The warmer weather will bring you outdoors and on to your patio. Whether it’s for entertaining or your own enjoyment, a few careful considerations when it comes to finding the right furniture will have you breathing in the fresh air from the comfort of your own patio all season long.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — I've never visited the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in Denver, but I can pretend. That's because I have a stainless steel soaking tub in my master bathroom that's made by the same company that built the custom tub for the Four Seasons spa.

Tulips are the floral harbingers of spring, providing brilliant bursts of colour in otherwise drab surroundings. But a few varieties offer another kind of bouquet, too: They're fragrant.
