  • A Summer Romance by Designer Bhumika Sharma

With intricate embroideries, bright summery hues and effortless silhouettes — Bhumika Sharma’s festive collection — Summer Romance, perfectly invokes the spirit of summer and festivity.

Ever since the inception of her eponymous label, designer Bhumika Sharma has gained immense popularity for her clothing line, which is a reflection of her passion for India’s rich heritage, beautiful culture, and valued traditions. Her love for traditional fabrics, embroideries and time spent with her ‘karigars’ has allowed her to express her design sensibilities and helped her create surreal sartorial pieces that strike a perfect balance between traditions and contemporary trends. Known for her aesthetics and nuanced craftsmanship, Bhumika has enthralled the Indian fashion industry one collection after another, and now she is doing it again with her latest festive edit — Summer Romance.

As the name suggests, the collection draws inspirations from the warmth of summer, and blends in the couturier’s trademark traditional sensibilities, along with keeping in mind the functionality needed in today’s times. Talking to Darpan about the inspiration for the collection and its vibe, Bhumika says, “The collection is inspired from the summer sun, white blooming lilies, summertime romances, feminine elegance and the vibrant and happy summery hues.”

While the collection brings in the traditional festive vibes with intricate pearl, thread and mirror embroideries in gold, silver accents and emerald green stones on Bhumika Sharma Designs’ signature prints, it also reflects modern minimalism through its effortless, easy to wear, chic silhouettes.

Speaking about the USP of the Summer Romance collection, the designer, who is also a favourite amongst Bollywood stars like Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Pranutan, Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda, Raveena Tandon, Bhumi Pednekar, Kajol, Tamannaah Bhatia, Jacqueline Fernandez and others, shares, “The USP of Summer Romance is our beautiful embroideries on signature prints in contemporary silhouettes.”

The graceful silhouettes in Bhumika Sharma’s Summer Romance collection range from embroidered peplum jackets, pre-stitched draped dhoti pants, frill kurtas, anarkalis with pearl and emerald stonework, long capes, skirts, embroidered bustier, anarkalis with exaggerated sleeves, palazzos, pre-stitched layered sarees with hand-embroidered pearl and mirror work blouse, and intricately handcrafted stonework belts. The summery colour palette of red, Haldis and nudes, further brings freshness to this exquisite and exotic collection.

“This colour palette is summery yet festive. Haldis and reds resonate with celebrations and nudes exude minimalism and elegance,” explains the designer, who has always been inclined towards arts. Despite no formal training in fine arts, Bhumika loves to paint, works with oil colours and has always loved fashion, it was this fondness for art and fashion that not only led her to launch her label — Bhumika Sharma Designs but also create a definitive aesthetic for her brand.

Bhumika has also studied Fashion Marketing from Pearl Academy of Fashion, New Delhi and has a deep understanding of the design heritage of the various states of India. From unique printing techniques to heritage fabrics and intricate embroideries, she has delved deep into the Indian heritage culture and tries to bring those aesthetics and nuances to life through her sartorial pieces. Bhumika has worked with block prints, hand screen prints in beautiful Indian motifs and jaals like paisleys and geometric patterns. Embroidery techniques such as zardosi, ari, pitta and mirror work have also been showcased in her designs. The USP of her label is these unique prints and hand embroideries along with keeping the silhouettes classic and elegant and concentrating on the finish and embellishments. Her appreciation for Kashmiri thread work, mirror work, block printing and zardosi is also evident in her couture.

Summer Romance undoubtedly borrows from Bhumika’s signature use of traditional elements and embroidery and beautifully weaves a nice summer mood with its colour palettes and chic easy to wear styles. Each ensemble in the collection captures the spirit of summer and proposes an individual visual expression that not only has a traditional appeal but also a new-age modern vibe.

Priced between INR 39000-120000 the collection can be purchased through Bhumika Sharma’s official website. You can check out the complete collection on her social media handles or her website.

Bhumika Sharma’s label retails in India, the US, UK, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Indonesia and Thailand. Her plans for the future are to expand her retail network as well as focus on bringing forth more gems from India’s rich design heritage.
