Beauty and the Braid

  • Beauty and the Braid
From Blake Lively to Nicole Kidman, supermodels, catwalk shows, annual gala film stars and music events – we’ve seen this delicious new braiding style everywhere in 2011. During the holiday season the look is set to be even sleeker and sexier. We’re talking the good old fashioned braid – with a twist – an untidy twist!

It’s a perfect treat for long hair, especially because the ‘messy braid’-as it has come to be known-works well for most textures (thin or thick strands). A messy braid can be worn down the back or to the side of the head, it may incorporate all hair or just a few strands, and works well for day (work, play) or evening (dinner party or Christmas do) looks. The very best thing about this particular trend is the fact that when your hair is a mess, and you’re super-busy, this style offers a gorgeous solution.

Get The Look

1 Begin (if you have time) by working mousse through the hair to add texture, then blow dry. Another time-saving option is to spray dry shampoo through your hair prior to styling.

2  Gather all hair (or just a side section that you would like to braid) to one side of the head.

3  Loosely braid the hair starting with the section that is directly behind the ear and secure with a hair tie; alternatively if you’re only braiding some of the hair, wind your new braid into the rest of your do, securing with a pin/decorative clip.

4  Hairspray the style to give it a matte finish, and use your hands to rough it up and give it a bit of ‘messy’ texture.

5 The top of your hair should appear loose and unruly, and your braid should simply sit (or causally ‘hang’) to the desired position. For a special event or party you could add hair crystals or flowers as accessories – but remember that less is more. Similarly, only one or two braids per look works best.

Steal their style

Whether you have grown up within South Asian culture or not, we’re sure you’ll agree that utilizing a chic, colorful ‘parandi’ in a braid or up-do adds unique flair that will have you standing out in the crowd this party season!

Although these savvy little trimmings are historically used as a traditional or cultural accessory, they are quickly gaining cred in western fashion circles. To get the look, simply choose a colour and style that suits, then weave the parandi’s lengths into your own braid (or style), and arrange the remaining tassels and jewels in the final stages of styling.

Alternatively, your local hair stylist should be able to weave some magic and will have you looking fabulous in no time. Parandi’s are available from many hair and accessory stores nationwide, or try www.786shop.com where they retail from about $12.
