  • The Year of The Horse: Top Runway Trends for Spring 2014
I don’t know about you but the uncertainty of a New Year always excites and scares me. Not knowing what the New Year has in hold for you; it’s a whole new year of possibilities! As we bid farewell to the ‘Year of the Snake,’ 2014 is all about the horse. According to the Chinese calendar, this seventh animal symbolizes “nobility, class, speed and perseverance.” Not all surprises are good so let us prepare you with some arsenal to start off the ‘Year of the Horse’ right. Here are the top runway trends for Spring 2014 to stock up your closet.

First trend to look out for is  the contrast-collar button-downs. The men’s dress shirt gets a very sexy makeover with cool contrasting collars, and textured cuffs add a strong versatility to the dress shirt. With the shirt buttoned down just right, it gives a certain feminine mystique!

The wide leg trousers are back! This is my favourite trend. The flare with a high waste gives the illusion of an elongated frame. It can make anybody – and I mean ANYBODY – look long and lean. Trust me ladies, the wide leg trousers are not just for supermodels! If you are shorter, look for a leaner flare which would add the right amount of drama to your pants. It’s all about the confidence!

Versatile outerwear: bomber jackets and boxy cropped jackets. Jackets are getting edgier for this spring. A plethora of colours, beautiful prints and detailed textures can add versatility to any girly dress or complement  the coolness of dressy shorts. Whether it’s a social event, a casual meeting or a business meeting; we have a jacket for it all!

Tea length skirts are a middle ground for skirts this spring. At first glance, it may come off as too conservative but never judge a book by its cover! The lady-like hemline paired with a cropped top will stop any person dead in their tracks. This tea length skirt can be just as modern and edge as the mini. Paired with a crop top, it will offset the length of the skirt and in effect give you an illusion of elongated torso.

This year, trousers have also been given an edgy makeover. The athletic stripe, tuxedo detailing, gives a more sport sophisticated vibe. Pair these trousers with a casual non- button-down to keep the look modern. Dare to be different? Take a page from Costello Tagliapietra’s reverse tuxedo with the stripe running along the inside seam. This look is fresh and clean. With the right pairing you can keep the look modern and polished.

Last but not the least, your closet is unfinished without the collarless coat. A girl can never have too many jackets or coats. A long streamlined coat without the collar or lapel is a great touch for the spring. This coat can be paired with pleather tights for a night out with the girls or a sophisticated addition to your office ensemble.

As the ‘Year of the Horse’ symbolizes, this  year it’s all about class, nobility and perseverance. When done right, you can bring your wardrobe to life with spring’s latest  trends.
