Dupe Destinations: Travel Smarter, Skip the Crowds in 2026

  • Dupe Destinations: Travel Smarter, Skip the Crowds in 2026

Visiting iconic destinations and landmarks is often considered the gold standard of travel. The fancy canals and bridges of Venice, the postcard-worthy Swiss Alps, the pristine, perfect beaches of Koh Samui, etc., we have perhaps romanticized them all while scrolling on social media. However, these ‘must-visit’ destinations can often prove to be far less romantic!

Travel is meant to be an invigorating, delightful, and deeply immersive, not a hurried experience. The good news is you don’t need to follow the crowds to experience the magic of wanderlust. Many smart travelers today are choosing ‘dupe destinations’ (lesser-known alternative destinations) that offer similar landscapes, culture, and atmosphere, which are often significantly cheaper and are not crowded. So, if 2026 is the year you want to travel more intentionally, these destinations promise all the magic without chaos and crowd.

Instead of Venice, Head to Ljubljana

Venice is undeniably one of the most beautiful cities in the world. But with over a hundred thousand visitors visiting this canal city each year, Venice is losing its magic amid overcrowded canals, gondolas knocking into each other, and throngs of people struggling to get a piece of Venetian charm for their socials.

For an equally enchanting experience, swap Venice with Ljubljana. With a history dating back to the Roman era, elegant architecture, expansive green spaces, and, of course, charming bridges over the River Ljubljanica, Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, offers a postcard-worthy setting without having to break the bank. Golden sunsets and sunrises, candlelight dinners by the riverside, leisurely strolls through architectural marvels, and serene boat rides in the beautiful river, Ljubljana is ideal for travel enthusiasts wanting to indulge in the Venetian charm minus the crowds.

Austrian Alps Over Swiss Alps

For Bollywood fans, Switzerland is the ultimate dream destination. The snowy peak of Jungfrau, the scenic town of Interlaken, the mountain resort of Zermatt, the beautiful lakeside city of Lucerne, and idyllic Geneva are all undeniably stunning, but they also come with heavy tourist traffic and hefty price tags.

Neighboring country Austria, on the other hand, offers landscapes that are every bit as dramatic and spectacular as the Swiss. Regions like Tyrol, Innsbruck, Vorarlberg, Salzburg, and Graz not only boast breathtaking scenery, but Austria’s historic architecture and vibrant culture also offer an experience that feels richer, while being easier on the pocket. What’s more, as many Austrian towns share borders with Switzerland, you can easily hop across to explore Swiss gems like Zurich, St. Gallen, Rhine Falls, Trogen, St. Moritz, and Säntis. Best of both worlds indeed.

Head to Kraków Instead of Prague

Prague and Krakow very much have the same vibe. Both are famous for their remarkably preserved UNESCO World Heritage historic sites, and their cobblestone streets lined with restaurants, museums, and architectural wonders at every turn. However, walking around the Czech capital city, Prague, especially around popular landmarks like Old Town Square, Prague Castle, and Charles Bridge, can feel more like navigating a sea of people than exploring a historic capital.

On the other hand, Poland’s Kraków, with a similar atmosphere, enchants with its Wawel Royal Castle, Old Town, and Cathedral that resonates with centuries of royal history. The medieval city is also famed for the historic Kazimierz district, which hums with numerous murals and shop signs, reminiscent of the old Jewish streets. With its historic streets that feel like movie sets, delicious food, and buzzing nightlife, Kraków is Europe's best hidden gem, which is precisely its appeal.

Skip Koh Samui For Rodrigues Island

With its pristine beaches, luxury resorts, and vibrant nightlife, the beautiful island of Koh Samui attracts millions of tourists from across the globe every year. But its popularity also means busy beaches, roads full of scooters, traffic congestion and increasingly commercialized shorelines. And to gently break the news to ‘The White Lotus’ fans planning a trip inspired by the show, it wasn’t filmed here.

Located near Mauritius, Rodrigues Island can serve as an excellent alternative to Koh Samui if one is seeking a secluded, rugged, and slow-paced island experience rather than a bustling resort destination. Rodrigues offers pristine, uncrowded beaches, hiking, and rich Creole culture, contrasting with Koh Samui’s loud nightlife, extensive resorts, and developed social atmosphere.

Skip Bali, Try Raja Ampat

If you have seen Julia Roberts’ ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, you are surely fascinated by the tropical allure of Bali. In recent years, however, this Indonesian island has also become a top choice for millions of backpackers, influencers, spiritual seekers, and surfers alike. And just like that, Bali is no longer the quiet paradise it used to be. Rather, Bali today is an island bustling with overtourism, congestion, and rising costs.

Indonesia’s Raja Ampat, by contrast, remains relatively untouched and serves as a good dupe for Bali. Meaning Four Kings, Raja Ampat is located off the northwest tip of the Bird’s Head Peninsula in Southwest Papua province, Indonesia. This archipelago of more than 1,500 small islands is home to some of the richest marine biodiversity on Earth, making it truly unique. It is no surprise that many travel publications frequently describe it as one of the most beautiful island regions in the world.

Sometimes, of course, nonstop flights aren’t available or affordable. What you don’t want to do, I learned through bitter experience, is try to save money by booking flight legs with different, unaffiliated airlines — especially if you’re dealing with luggage or customs.
