Winter Road Trips from Vancouver

By Tarana Rana, 27 Jan, 2020 07:24 PM

Planning your next getaway? Ski, snowshoe and sled in these five winter destinations in BC.

Winter is officially in full swing and if you’re looking for a quick getaway to make the most of the season, you’re in luck. Vancouver is a stone’s throw away from some truly beautiful winter destinations. Whether you prefer to spend your vacation days in the presence of fresh snow, or would rather watch winter’s storms from the comfort of a resort, these five winter getaways offer something for everyone.

    Manning Park Resort

If you’re looking for an outdoor adventure with the family, check out Manning Park Resort, located in the Cascade Mountains. Enjoy a range of winter activities such as Nordic skiing, alpine skiing and snowboarding as well as tubing, ice-skating and snowshoeing. The resort is also a popular destination for stargazing, thanks to its limited light pollution.

    Nakusp Hot Springs

If you’re looking for a tranquil, relaxing getaway, Nakusp Hot Springs are a welcome respite. These hot springs are located in the Kuskanax Valley in the foothills of the Selkirk Mountains and claim to have some of the cleanest natural spring water around. The mineral springs are surrounded by mountains and trees and are perfect for rejuvenating. After a soak, you can explore the pristine surrounding area for some winter hiking or snowshoeing.

    Tofino

Ever experienced the fury of a winter storm? Tofino is a hot spot for winter storm watching and the best time to go is from November to late February. For some unforgettable views, you can head to the deck of the Kwisitis Visitor Centre (possible closures this winter) or Florencia Bay Look-out, within Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The Long Beach Lodge Resort and the Wickaninnish Inn are also both great places to experience this natural phenomenon.

    Nelson

The charming town of Nelson is a winter wonderland at this time of year, and is home to some of the best skiing around. Explore the quaint town and it’s artisan stores and go skiing at the numerous resorts and hills. As Kootenay Lake doesn’t freeze over, winter fishing is another seasonal favourite at Nelson. Another unique activity is fat tire biking, for adrenaline junkies, which is essentially mountain biking in the snow!

    Valemount

Ready for adventure? With breathtaking views, dogsledding in the wilderness is an unforgettable experience, whether you ride cozily in the sled or take the reins yourself. Cold Fire Creek Dogsledding near Valemount offers a variety of tours – from an hour up to an overnight trip that is an experience of a lifetime.
