US Supreme Court blocks Texas abortion law

Darpan News Desk IANS, 15 Oct, 2014 10:48 AM
The US Supreme Court has blocked a Texas state law that reduced the number of abortion clinics in the nation's second most populous state, media reported Wednesday.

The Texas abortion law was implemented June 11, 2013, the Washington Post reported.

The law banned abortion at 20 weeks post-fertilisation and shut down 13 abortion clinics all over Texas.

The Supreme Court's order announced Tuesday night, will allow more than a dozen of the clinics to resume operation, according to the Centre for Reproductive Rights, the group that challenged the law.

The order was unsigned, but that apparently meant Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and the other five justices - Anthony M. Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan - were in agreement.

The action will allow 13 abortion clinics, that closed after the appeals court decision, to reopen, said Nancy Northup, president of the centre.

Texas has been a leader among a number of US states that have enacted new laws for abortion clinics.
