Woman Sentenced To 1 Year In Jail For Impersonating Ex-boyfriend On Facebook, Sending Herself Threat

IANS, 06 Dec, 2016 01:15 PM
A California woman was sentenced to serve one year in jail after officials say she falsely accused her ex-boyfriend of stalking her and threatening her on Facebook.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Stephani Renae Lawson, 25, allegedly created a Facebook account impersonating her ex-boyfriend, using it to send numerous threats to her own account.

Lawson’s ex-boyfriend was arrested four times between September and December 2015 after Lawson filed multiple police reports, saying her ex-boyfriend had violated a restraining order, stalked her and threatened to kill her via Facebook.

Although charges were initially filed against Lawson’s ex-boyfriend, investigators later determined Lawson’s claims were false.

Media reported that Lawson used the fake account to send herself more threats two days before her ex-boyfriend’s preliminary hearing.

When investigators followed up on Lawson’s claims, they found she used her own devices and internet provider address to make the threatening Facebook messages.

That is when authorities determined Lawson’s ex-boyfriend was the true victim.

Charges against the man have since been dropped.

Lawson was later arrested and charged with one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud or deceit, and one felony count of perjury.

Last week, a judge sentenced her to serve one year in jail after she pleaded guilty to the charges.
