  • Arson suspect identified and arrested

A suspect has been identified in relation to a string of brush fires in Cloverdale.

On August 16, between 1:59 a.m. and 2:31 a.m. Surrey RCMP responded to reports of several fires in the Cloverdale area within a short time span.

On August 26, 2022, a 54-year-old woman was arrested and the Surrey RCMP General Investigation Unit executed a search warrant on a residence in the Cloverdale area.

The suspect was later released pending further investigation.

Investigators are actively working to advance the investigation and will be recommending charges in relation to this string of fires, says, Surrey RCMP Media Relations Officer, Corporal Vanessa Munn. Although a suspect has been identified, we are still encouraging everyone who resides in the area to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police

Anyone with information about these fires is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP.

While the investigation is in its early stages, this incident does appear to be targeted and there does not appear to be any ongoing risk to the public. The victim is known to police. Traffic in the area of Patterson Avenue and Hurst Street will likely be affected for several hours due to the ongoing investigation.

A statement from Castlegar RCMP says the crash happened Thursday as the 18-year-old woman and 15 other Quebec students were aboard the bus while taking part in a program at the nearby Selkirk College.
