Canada Post Still Erecting Lock Boxes Despite Liberal Mail Delivery Pledge

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 26 Oct, 2015 11:14 AM
OTTAWA — Canada Post appears to be waiting to be told to stop installing community mailboxes.

With more of the controversial boxes being erected in Montreal, Ottawa and London, Ont., the union representing postal workers is urging Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau to contact Canada Post to halt the process.

Trudeau promised during the election campaign to reverse cuts to door-to-door mail delivery that were begun under the Harper Conservative government.

The Liberals, who formally take office next week, have not given Canada Post any direct indications that they want the Crown agency to halt its five-year plan to convert urban areas to community delivery.

There have been several protests against the box installations since the federal election, with some people standing or lying on dirt piles to prevent workers from placing cement foundations for the mailboxes.

While the Canadian Union of Postal Workers is urging Trudeau to pick up the phone, Canada Post says it's awaiting a call.
