Drivers reminded of road safety

The B-C Coroners Service is reminding drivers of a number of safety tips after a week that saw several fatal crashes in the province.

It says there were 19 accidental deaths due to motor vehicle crashes between July 5th and 10th, with 12 of those deaths happening in three of the incidents.

Acting chief coroner John McNamee says statistics show the risk of deadly motor-vehicle crashes goes up in July, August and September.

Motorists are being advised to plan their trips ahead of time, wear a seatbelt, follow the speed limit and not drink and drive.

The 37-year-old driver remained at the scene. Police say they learned he had been prohibited from driving because of being unlicensed and impaired. Mounties say in a statement they obtained a breath sample and while the man did have alcohol in his system, it was under the legal limit.

Vancouver police arrested 25-year-old Mohammed Cortes Torres on Sunday. Police say Cortes Torres was a Surrey resident at the time of the homicide but more recently stayed on Vancouver Island.
