Indigenous Economy Worth $1.1 Billion In Atlantic Canada, Study Finds

Darpan News Desk The Canadian Press, 27 Apr, 2016 10:40 AM
HALIFAX — A newly released study says Atlantic Canada's economy is bolstered by $1.14 billion in business and household spending from the region's indigenous community.

The study says the indigenous economy creates more than 16,700 full time equivalent employment positions and contributes $184.5 million in overall tax revenues.

Study co-chair John G. Paul says the study shows indigenous communities are significant contributors to the region's economy.

Paul says given the indigenous population is the fastest growing and youngest in Canada, aboriginal communities are looking for innovative ways to grow the economy.

The report's findings will be used to inform government and community economic policy and to help develop business growth.

The report was authored by Group ATN Consulting on behalf of the Atlantic Policy Congress of First Nations Chiefs Secretariat.
