Jump in home sales in September

The Canadian Real Estate Association says home sales climbed 1.9 per cent on a month-over-month basis in September, reaching their highest level since July 2023.

The national increase was led by Greater Vancouver and Victoria, as well as the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton-Burlington, Montreal and Quebec City.

The association is downgrading its housing market forecast, saying it now expects the national market will remain in "more of a holding pattern" until next spring.

It says the Bank of Canada's interest rate cuts haven't spurred the gradual improvement it previously anticipated.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland said Tuesday the government's fall economic statement will focus on housing and affordability within a fiscally responsible framework. Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem warned premiers who publicly asked the central bank to not raise interest rates last month that their requests could undermine the institution's independence.
