Montreal transit maintenance workers announce third strike, spanning most of November

  • Montreal transit maintenance workers announce third strike, spanning most of November

Maintenance employees with Montreal's public transit agency are going on strike for the month of November, their third walkout since June.

The union representing the 2,400 employees says the strike will begin on Halloween night and continue until Nov. 28.

Employees will refuse to work overtime, and bus and metro service will be interrupted occasionally outside of rush hour.

However, the parameters for the interruptions at the Société de transport de Montréal remain unclear.

The union says its third strike since June is necessary due to the transit agency's "inflexibility" in contract negotiations.

In October, Labour Minister Jean Boulet appointed a team of conciliator-mediators to help bring the sides closer together after mediation failed.

Management at the transit agency says it's disappointed with the strike, arguing the union didn't give the latest negotiation efforts much time as the team was only appointed two weeks ago.
