Number of active blazes down

The number of active wildfires continues to tick down.

There are 240 active blazes across B-C, with 35 classified as burning out of control.

Most of the out-of-control wildfires are located in the northern half of the province, while dozens of blazes in the southeast -- a hotspot for fires this year -- are mostly classified as under control or "being held" within their current boundaries.

Still, the B-C Wildfire Service says a warming and drying trend is expected to stretch into the weekend and anyone considering lighting a campfire should check local restrictions and ensure they have water on hand.

Treasury Board President Anita Anand says no government ministry and agency will be left out of the process of cutting 5,000 public-service positions. The 2024 budget, tabled Tuesday, says 5,000 positions will be cut through natural attrition, which is expected to save $4.2 billion over five years.
