Procession Honours Fallen RCMP Officer As Body Is Returned To Langford, B.c

The Canadian Press, 08 Apr, 2016 12:18 PM
LANGFORD, B.C. — A second sombre procession is scheduled to travel along the highways of southern Vancouver Island today as the body of RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett is returned to Langford.

The Capital Regional District Traffic Safety Commission says a plane carrying Beckett's body is due to land at the Victoria airport at about 2:30 p.m.

It says members of the West Shore RCMP detachment will provide an escort to a funeral home in Langford.

A similar escort was provided Thursday when the body of the 11-year member of the RCMP was taken to the airport.

An official who did not want to be named because of the sensitivity of the police investigation says Beckett's body was flown to Vernon for medical analysis.

Beckett was killed early Tuesday when a pickup truck collided with her cruiser at an intersection in Langford.

The 32-year-old officer is survived by her husband and two young children.

RCMP Cpl. Janelle Shoihet said Mounties are conducting a criminal investigation, and Saanich police have confirmed they are responsible for looking into the circumstances of the collision that killed Beckett.

"We have a full crash-analyst team here at Saanich," said acting Sgt. Jereme Leslie of Saanich police. "We have all of the equipment and staffing power to do that."

The Mounties say the other driver involved in the crash wasn't seriously injured and he was taken into custody shortly after the incident Tuesday morning. He was released the following day without being charged.
