Snow and cold in Metro Vancouver wreaks havoc on the roads

An abrupt snowfall in Metro Vancouver resulted in snarled traffic and set off numerous crashes on major routes.

Environment Canada says the area received about 3 centimetres of snow Thursday, which combined with freezing temperatures to create icy roads throughout the region.

Among the most serious incidents was a crash involving about two dozen vehicles that shut down the eastbound lanes of Highway 91 in Richmond, which stalled traffic for hours during the evening commute.

Richmond R-C-M-P confirmed there were "multiple clusters of smaller non-injury motor vehicle collisions along Highway 91 at Nelson Road, but police responses were limited to serious-injury collisions due to call volume.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Chief Karen Fry says in a social media post that flames broke out before midnight Sunday prompting a three-alarm response to the large fire. The blaze involved five shops on 41st Avenue between Maple Street and East Boulevard, including two restaurants, a bakery, a yogurt shop and a vegetable market.

2 in hospital after Cloverdale collision

One man is in custody following a collision that sent two pedestrians to hospital yesterday afternoon. The pedestrians, a 24-year-old man and a 24-year old woman, were transported to hospital with serious injuries. A suspect was arrested in the area shortly after the collision.
