Supreme Court of Canada will not hear Rwandan war criminal's appeal

OTTAWA — The Supreme Court of Canada will not hear the appeal of the first person ever found guilty under Canada's war-crimes legislation.

Rwandan war criminal Desire Munyaneza was found guilty in 2009 of several charges relating to rape and civilian massacres in Rwanda.

They occurred during the genocide of 800,000 Rwandans — mostly minority Tutsis and moderate Hutus — between April and July of 1994.

The RCMP arrested Munyaneza at his Toronto-area home in 2005 and he was eventually convicted on seven charges related to genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

He was sentenced to automatic life in prison.

As usual, the Supreme Court did not give reasons for its decision.
