Surrey RCMP Looking For Interested Volunteers - Apply Now!

Darpan News Desk, 30 Jan, 2019 06:41 PM

Surrey RCMP is once again accepting volunteer applications for individuals interested in participating in our community and crime prevention programs and attending community engagement events providing public safety information.

Applications are accepted from January 29th to February 28th 2019 through the Surrey RCMP website.

This is a great opportunity to get involved in your community and learn more about what you can do to help ensure Surrey continues to be a safe and livable city along with gaining valuable experience.

In 2018, volunteers contributed over 10,000 hours to programs and events in Surrey educating the public on all matters of crime prevention, traffic safety, and community engagement.

The Stolen Auto Recovery Program (SAR) in particular had a very successful year with 42 stolen vehicles being recovered thanks to the keen eyes of volunteers. Out of those vehicles recovered, four arrests also occurred as a result of volunteers’ hard work.

You’re always trying to get that notification that says you’ve found a stolen vehicle, says volunteer Cheaton Virk, 27 years old, regarding the onboard tablet used by SAR volunteers to check license plates. Sometimes you put it in twice just to be sure. It is kind of exciting and gives you an idea what it’s like being an officer out on the streets looking for criminal activity.

Many volunteers enjoy the different aspects of each program as it gives them an opportunity to have an immediate impact on reducing crime and improving public safety in their community.

I like getting that thumbs up from motorists and residents when we’re out on the roadways, says Jasmeet Welkhu, 24 years old, on her presence at Speed Watch events to raise awareness about speeding in certain areas of the city. People will always come up to you and thank you and give recommendations on different places to go to crack down on speeders.

I like the overall community engagement aspect of the work we do, says volunteer Matthew Strang, 21 years old. It’s definitely opened my eyes a little as I probably didn’t appreciate how important this is in policing. I really like how flexible the work is and that it gives you a chance to see other parts of the city.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and think you have what it takes, please ensure you meet the minimum requirements before applying online. These include:

19 years of age or older

Canadian Citizen (or permanent resident for a minimum of 5 years)

    Valid Class 5 driver’s license

    Be reliable and have integrity

    Attend all required training sessions

Volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per month for one year

    Pass a suitability interview

Successfully pass a security background check

    Complete a six-month probationary period

(Please note, only volunteer applications submitted online will be accepted).
